The Story
The clients came to us having inherited a property from their grandparents. The existing house was so old and rotted out from damage and neglect over the years it wasn’t salvageable, so they wanted a whole new house. They loved the idea of something with a cabin feel, but in the city. The neighborhood had several styles of home design, so we weren’t held to one style. We felt like we could get creative and it would still fit in.
To begin the design process we separated the house into two wings: one we called the ‘party wing’ and the other the ‘private wing.’ The party wing included the kitchen, dining room and living room. The private wing housed the bedrooms and bathrooms. In the backyard we created a large, at-grade deck space for entertaining guests. The clients wanted to use green products and methods as much as possible, but high performance homes can be very costly. We ended up specifying SIPS (Structurally Insulated Panels). It was the first project we worked on incorporating prefabricated panels and we learned a lot from the experience. The home is anticipated to be a net-zero energy building once complete.
