The Story
Our clients had purchased a beautiful home just outside of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, but the aesthetic didn’t quite fit with theirs. They came to us with the hope of remodeling the basement, and reimagining some of the original focal points of the house to blend it more with their style. We were tasked with the objective to modernize the basement, stairs, and redesign the massive first floor fireplace. Our approach was to give the clients the modern touches they desired, but ensure that the new spaces would still meld with the rest of the house.
In the basement we focused on built-ins to divide a cavernous theater space into a smaller lounge area and guest bedroom. We were able to add a much needed closet and install clerestory windows to let light into the space. The original basement bar was dark and lacking in storage so we designed a floor-to-ceiling built-in unit with both closed and open shelving, and a new counter height bar/island. To bring more light into the space, the bar shelves are illuminated in front and back to throw light on the wall as well as the bottles. Finally, we swapped out the log railing with modern steel to tie the basement to the rest of the house. For the main floor fireplace we specified a local modern stone for the base which lightened the space overall, and introduced a darker soap stone to accent the room.
As much as we love a whole house overhaul, it is always a treat to get the opportunity to focus on space planning utilizing details and finishes, which is what really brought this remodel together. The result was a comfortable, inviting space with increased warmth and modern touches, in a house that still retains elements of the Colorado aesthetic the home warrants.
